Blog Traffic

If your sole aim by blog commenting is to gain traffic there is no use commenting on a blog which gets one or two visitors a day, because the only people who are gonna visit your blog are the blogger and his grandma.

If I was going to comment on a blog for traffic I would make sure it had no less than 100 visitors a day, that way your comment is getting exposed to a potential 100 people. The quickest way to determine a blog’s traffic is by looking at the blogs feed count and/or its alexa ranking, either are a decent quick method of traffic evaluation.

If the blog does not have a chicklet showing the feedcount then there is an alternative method of finding out. If you visit the website feedcompare.com it should give you the data, although sometimes it doesn’t work.
There are many toolbars and add-ons for your browser which tell you a sites alexa rank, if like me you use the Chrome browser which doesn’t allow toolbars then you can use the http://popuri.us/ service to quickly check a sites Alexa, Technorati, Pagerank and other metrics you can use to assess a website.

Quality of comment

When blog commenting for traffic your comment is like a mini advertisement for yourself, that being said don't make it look like you are advertising. The simplest way to get people to click on your link is to leave unique, quality comments. A good comment should leave the reader wanting to know more about who you are and what you know, which leads to clicks.

In terms of length I would say never go for less than three sentences, this isn’t written in stone, but I think it serves as a good guide. Shorter comments can often be skipped past unknowingly by people, whereas a long one is bound to catch someone’s attention.

Anchor Text

Although the unwritten rules of commenting say you should only use your name in the 'name:' field it should be known that an interesting name leads to higher click through rates (CTR). Here are some examples:

Name: Birthday Cards - Low CTR
Name: Danny Cooper - Average CTR
Name: Free Cash! - High CTR

Although the above examples are basic, I think you get the idea.

Number of other commentators

The number of commentators can play a huge part in the success of your comment, for example if there are 300 comments before yours it's very unlikely that yours will be seen. On the flip side, this can work both ways, if you are the first commentator and there are 300 below yours there may be a big discussion and you will reap the benefits by being the first.
